Don´t miss this movie during the holiday season. Highly recommended. I wouldn´t call it a instant scifi classic as others have claimed, but it is definitely worth a visit to the theater. Just 3 things.
It´s a sci-fi film without a focus on action, which typically means it´s a film that explores some deep aspect of humanity (think Her, Ex Machina). When done right, it makes you think and reconsider you axioms. This film does this for the concept of connection, from the superficial to the emotional.
It´s directed by Denis Villeneuve, which is mastering the art of creating tension by building anticipation. This means you won´t be bored, despite the fact that trailers have basically spoiled a lot of what the director was trying to achieve. But Villeneuve gets a good job done to prevent you from blinking as you know something is going to happen... but it doesn´t... until it does. You know what I´m talking if you´ve seen Sicario. If not, please check out the following video where one of its most memorable scenes is dissected.
Amy Adams will probably be the Meryl Streep of this generation. She has the gift of making any single role believable. In this movie she carries so much weight that you can credit the whole emotional load to her. And while the script felt to me a little overdosed on that, she manages to tone it down to something you can relate.
Go watch this one, you won´t regret. Enjoy the weekend!
